Cable cutters or wire cutters are usually hand-held tools requiring a simple one or two handed operation, using two steel blades to cut through wires or cables, similar to a pair of scissors. Depending on the gauge of cable to be cut there is a variety of cutters to choose from, from small pocket sized wire cutters to larger heavy duty cable cutters.

Bolt croppers are designed for cutting wire, chains, padlocks and bolts. Most bolt cutters have hardened steel adjustable jaws. Originally a bolt cropper was used to cut bolt seals from shipping containers at the delivery point. Having short blades and long handles with compound hinges allows maximum leverage and cutting force. The blades can vary according to the type of job, the “centre cut” is the most common.
